I like them and enjoyed watching the sky of south.
we live in Iran, and we have plenty of deserts with dark sky. do you think that I can take some good shots from milky way with a D5100 and it's 18-55 kit lens ?
do you suggest 35 mm AF-s F1.8 G DX lens for astrophotography? I think that's much sharper than my kit lens.

Jim, it is a yellow laser. I think the issue is 589 nm occurs near the tails of the green and red Bayer filters in the sensor and when a monochromatic source is weak it registers a different color than when it is bright. This does not happen for broadband sources. I've noticed the color changing from yellow to orange or orange to yellow when photographing a beam from its source into the sky, especially at low exposures. Since you're the second person to comment on this, I've slightly modified the color of the beam in the last 2 photos. Bob

Truly spectacular photos - I had never seen so much of the southern sky. The Milky Way pictures beat my memories even from Starfire and Maui (of course!). But why is the laser red? Haven't they heard about Sodium yet? (Hopefully, that's a purpose of your trip.) Good luck and please keep posting.

I felt like a kid with a friend who knows a movie star... only my friend took pictures of Outer SPACE! In both cases, it's something you think you will only see on TV or in magazines... truly awe inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing!
