Greenland

From 37K feet on a flight from Paris to Salt Lake City, 29 June 2008. Lots of distortion from the aircraft window, engine exhaust, and "spots" from small ice crystals on the outside of the window. The flight reached 65 deg north latitude -- crossing the southern part of Greenland. All photos shot raw with a Canon G9.

  • The field of view of this shot is about one mile across at sea level. The big iceberg is about 700 feet in extent from the point at the top to the submerged part at the bottom.

  • Glacier with ice calving into the sea. I estimate the face of the galcier to be about 175 feet high and roughly one mile wide. I think the cloud like structure on the lower left is ground fog. Note the very blue color of the ice, said to be thousands of years old. Be sure to examine at Original size.
