Background: got this lens on June 26 2014 by putting my name on local camera store list two weeks before. Performed a AF Fine Tune using Horshack Dot-Tune method: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/50883023 and ended up at a value of -5 on the D800. I used an outdoor target at about 100 feet range to do the tuning. An AF tune value of -5 makes a big difference from 0 for this lens at 600 mm, so would recommend doing this if you are getting soft images.
I found the image stabilization very effective (the image of the leopard was at 1/80 second (albeit at only 420mm) and several others were at 1/250 or so). Also the image quality wide open is much better than I had hoped for - I was expecting this to be a f/8 sunny weather lens but it is astonishingly good in deep shadows.
The images displayed here were recorded as RAW and processed in a normal way in Lightroom 5.5 and converted to full resolution JPEGs. Most were lightly sharpened but some to values between 50-60. Even though these were mostly shot at ISO 1600 with some at 3200, no noise reduction has been applied, since I wanted to see how sharp the lens performed.
Comments and questions encouraged.

on August 8, 2014Uh, typos all over sorry for it.

on August 8, 2014Congrats, this is the first non-pro review that I found on this lens where someone CAN photograph.
Your pictures are excellent, nicely framed, perfect lighting.
Convinced me to purchase the lens for me D800.
Other so-called review that I checked had so terrible bad pictures that I already had ruled out this lens.
Once again thanks!
